Henry Ford Hospital in the United States conducted a study of 331 14- to 17-year-olds.adolescentsThe study found that 134 of them spent an average of 25 hours a week on the Internet. Twenty-six of the 134 subjects had high blood pressure, with both systolic and diastolic pressures higher than 90 per cent of their peers.
The programme facilitator advised parents to regulate the number of hours young people spend on the Internet to a maximum of two hours a day, and to encourage them to shift their focus away from computers and smartphones and engage in some physical activities. He also suggested that schools should set up a screening mechanism to find out if young people have any problems with the Internet.High blood pressureStudents in the risk group are tracked and a decision is made as to whether further treatment is needed.
The study also showed that in addition to being prone to high blood pressure, people who were addicted to the Internet also had higher rates of anxiety, depression and obesity. The study was published in the Journal of School Nursing.
