Walking poles should not be used for everyday walking

A recent test report on walking sticks released by the Consumer Council has once again raised public awareness of the functionality and safety of such assistive products. Local physiotherapists specifically pointed out that in addition to the product itself meeting performance standards, the user's ability to use the walking stick correctly is equally crucial. Many people mistakenly believe that trekking poles can replace everyday walking sticks; this is incorrect, especially for the elderly, as improper use may actually increase the risk of falls.

Chiropractor and physical therapist Ho Ying-fai explained that the main function of a walking stick is to provide extra support while walking. By using upper limb strength, it assists the lower limbs in propelling the body forward, thereby improving walking stability. As for professional trekking poles, they can more effectively distribute the impact force on the lower limbs during walking, reduce the burden on the knees and legs, and improve body balance by providing an additional fulcrum, helping to prevent falls.

Research data shows that the knee cartilage bears approximately three times and seven times the body weight in pressure when going uphill and downhill, respectively. Proper use of trekking poles or walking sticks can help reduce this pressure.Knee injuryIt can also enhance propulsion and overall endurance when climbing hills, making it especially suitable for long periods of time going uphill or downhill.Uneven strength in both legsHowever, Dr. Ho emphasized that although both trekking poles and walking sticks can assist walking, he does not recommend that the elderly use trekking poles as an aid for daily walking, because their support points are relatively insufficient, and the anti-slip design on the bottom is generally not as good as that of ordinary walking sticks. Improper use can easily lead to falls.

Dr. Ho further explained that seniors should consider using a cane when they experience the following conditions: poor balance requiring support for stability; poor eyesight, as a cane helps them spot obstacles earlier; and seniors with arthritis, a history of stroke, or severe osteoporosis, for whom a cane can be effective.Preventing falls and injuriesAnd improve daily activity abilities.

When choosing a walking stick for the elderly, the material of the sole is crucial. It must be of moderate size and made of soft rubber to ensure good grip. Since the sole is in frequent contact with the ground, it wears out quickly, so it needs to be inspected regularly and replaced when necessary to maintain its safety. Furthermore, the length of the walking stick should be adjusted according to the user's height. It is recommended to stand on flat ground with arms hanging naturally and measure the distance from the elbow (approximately 20 degrees bent) to the ground; this is the ideal length. If the walking stick is too long, it can cause the body to lean backward, increasing the chance of lower back pain; if it is too short, the user will have to bend over, which may lead to back pain or hunchback in the long run.

Regarding the materials used for walking sticks, lightweight yet structurally sturdy and durable materials are preferable. Common choices include aluminum alloy, while higher-end products may use carbon fiber. Prices vary, ranging from several hundred to over a thousand yuan depending on the material and country of origin, but the actual difference in performance is not significant. Additionally, it is recommended to install non-slip handle sleeves to prevent slipping. The handle should not be too small to avoid excessive strain on the hand joints of the elderly. Furthermore, all parts of the walking stick should be inspected regularly, including the handle, adjustment buttons, joints, and screws. Any loose parts should be replaced immediately to ensure safe use.

Currently, there are various styles of walking sticks on the market. Some products have a three-pronged, claw-shaped base for more stable support. As for which type of walking stick to choose, it is recommended to make a choice based on individual needs and physical condition. It is best to consult a chiropractor or physical therapist beforehand to avoid affecting walking performance or even causing inconvenience and danger due to an inappropriate choice.
