According to the Health Promotion Administration's "National Nutrition and Health Status Change Survey" from 2013 to 2015, a staggering 3.86 million people aged 18 and above in Taiwan did not have their blood pressure checked within the past year. The prevalence of hypertension among people aged 18 and above was 23.71 TP4T, meaning that one in four Taiwanese people has hypertension, and approximately 6.24 million people in Taiwan are at high risk for hypertension.

Professor Yeh Sen-chou, CEO of the Republic of China Heart Foundation, said that typical symptoms of hypertension include tightness between the head and neck, a feeling of heaviness in the head, and easy fatigue. However, most patients do not have any obvious symptoms when they have hypertension, and it is often not discovered until serious complications such as stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and kidney disease develop.

Professor Yeh Hung-yi, Deputy Executive Director, pointed out that while hypertension was previously more prevalent among the elderly over 65, in recent years, it has become increasingly common among younger people due to frequent dining out, high-sodium diets, and lack of exercise leading to obesity (blood pressure rises by 1 mmHg for every kilogram of weight gain). According to a survey by the Health Promotion Administration, the prevalence of hypertension among young people aged 18-39 in Taiwan is 4.7%, meaning that on average, about 1 in 21 people suffer from hypertension. It is estimated that over 360,000 people aged 18-39 in Taiwan have hypertension, and the survey also revealed that 70% of young adults are unaware they have hypertension!

What tests should be done?

「cardiovascular healthThe "test package" is primarily recommended for individuals over 40 years of age who already have the following chronic diseases or have a family history of these conditions: high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol; obesity; diabetes; a history of angina or myocardial infarction; or long-term smokers or drinkers. Younger individuals who frequently experience symptoms such as chest tightness, palpitations, dizziness, difficulty breathing, abnormal blood pressure, or unexplained fainting may also consider undergoing a cardiovascular health check.

When should I see a doctor?

● You have high blood pressure or suspect you have high blood pressure, and you also have the following symptoms: recurring headaches, chest pain or tightness in the chest, frequent nosebleeds, numbness or tingling, confusion, and blurred vision.

●For several consecutive days, blood pressure was found to be too high.

● If you have high blood pressure during pregnancy, you need to see a doctor, as it can be harmful to both you and your baby.

●When you already know you have high blood pressure and lifestyle changes are not effective in controlling your blood pressure.

● You are taking medication to control your high blood pressure, but if you start feeling dizzy, sleepy, or constipated, you may need to take other medications. However, you should not stop taking your high blood pressure medication without informing your doctor. Suddenly stopping can cause problems.
