High blood pressure can lead toCardiovascularHowever, about one in two people do not know they have high blood pressure; even if they know their blood pressure is high, only one in two people has it properly controlled.
The vast majority of hypertensive patients have no symptoms, and there is no high correlation between dizziness, headache, and stiff neck and hypertension. The only way to find out whether you have hypertension is to rely on repeated measurements.
Most people have the highest blood pressure when they wake up in the morning, so I often recommend that the elderly prepare a blood pressure monitor and measure their blood pressure every morning when they wake up. It is even better if you can measure it once in the morning and once in the evening. With the development of technology, most electronic blood pressure monitors are certified and very reliable.
An arm-mounted blood pressure monitor is more stable than a wrist-mounted blood pressure monitor, and has less variation between repeated measurements, making it relatively accurate. If an elderly person does not have a blood pressure monitor, at least measure their blood pressure every time they visit a doctor. If an elderly person visits a doctor less than once a year, they should measure their blood pressure at least once a year.
Since blood pressure in the elderly is more variable, experts recommend measuring blood pressure several times during each visit to the clinic to obtain an average value, which is more reliable. And only when blood pressure is measured at two different times can a diagnosis be made.
There are various factors that can affect the measurement of blood pressure in the elderly, such as "white coat hypertension" caused by stress or contact with medical staff, and the stiffness of blood vessels in the elderly can cause the sphygmomanometer to misjudge, resulting in "false hypertension".
Sometimes, in order to determine whether the patient's blood pressure at home is really normal, the patient can be asked to wear a 24-hour blood pressure monitor to obtain objective data, which helps to establish the diagnosis of hypertension. Some elderly people have too hard blood vessels, and the blood pressure monitor may not be able to flatten the blood vessels even when it reaches 200 mmHg. They always measure pulsation, which is mistakenly believed to be very high blood pressure, causing doctors to constantly add medicine to lower blood pressure. Patients often have low blood pressure and feel dizzy or even faint when they stand up. If arterial blood pressure monitoring is used, it is possible that the blood pressure was originally normal.
Therefore, if doctors find that patients do not respond well to antihypertensive drugs, or often feel dizzy when taking drugs, they should consider the possibility of "false hypertension". Such people do not need to use antihypertensive drugs. Instead, they should maintain a normal daily life, eat a proper diet, maintain a proper weight, do not smoke, do not drink excessive alcohol, maintain a balance between body and mind, and measure blood pressure occasionally. When resting, blood pressure should be kept below 140/90 mmHg.Aged 65 years old or aboveSome people in the medical field believe that if there are no other lesions, 150/90 can be allowed before treatment. Please confirm with your doctor.
