The Consumer Council recently released a test report on walking sticks, renewing public awareness of the functionality and safety of these assistive products. Local physiotherapists have emphasized that, in addition to the product itself meeting performance standards, proper user use of the cane is equally crucial. Many people mistakenly believe that trekking poles can replace everyday walking sticks. This is not true, and improper use, especially for the elderly, can actually increase the risk of falls.
Chiropractor and physiotherapist Ho Ying-hui explained that the primary function of a cane is to provide additional support while walking. By leveraging upper limb strength to assist the lower limbs in propulsion, this improves walking stability. Professional trekking poles can effectively distribute the impact force on the lower limbs during walking, reducing the burden on the knees and legs. They also provide an additional fulcrum for improved balance, helping to prevent falls.
According to research data, knee cartilage bears approximately three times and seven times the body weight pressure when climbing uphill and downhill respectively.Knee injuryIt can also enhance the propulsion force and overall endurance when climbing, especially suitable for long-term uphill or downhillUneven leg strengthHowever, Dr. Ho emphasized that although both trekking poles and walking sticks can assist with walking, it is not recommended for the elderly to use trekking poles as an auxiliary tool for daily walking. This is because they have relatively insufficient support points, and the anti-slip design of the bottom is generally not as good as that of ordinary walking sticks. Improper use can easily lead to falls.
Dr. Ho further explained that when the elderly have the following conditions, they need to consider using a cane: poor balance, need to rely on support to maintain body stability; for those with poor eyesight, a cane can help to detect obstacles ahead early; and for the elderly with arthritis, stroke or severe osteoporosis, a cane can be effective.Preventing falls and injuries, and improve the ability to carry out daily activities.
When choosing a cane for the elderly, the base material is crucial. Choose one with a moderately sized base made of soft rubber to ensure excellent non-slip properties. Since the base of the cane frequently contacts the ground, it wears quickly and requires regular inspection and replacement as necessary to maintain safety. Furthermore, the cane's length should be adjusted according to the user's height. It's recommended to measure the distance from the ground to the elbow, bent at approximately a 20-degree angle, while standing on a flat surface with your hands hanging naturally. This is the ideal cane length. If the cane is too long, it can easily cause the body to lean back, increasing the risk of back pain. If it is too short, the user will need to bend over to walk, which can lead to back pain or hunchback problems over time.
When it comes to the material of a cane, it is advisable to choose one that is lightweight, strong, and not prone to breakage. Common choices include aluminum alloy, while high-end products may use carbon fiber. In terms of price, depending on the material and place of origin, it generally ranges from a few hundred yuan to over a thousand yuan, but the actual difference in performance is not significant. In addition, it is recommended to install a non-slip handle cover to prevent slipping when holding the cane. The handle should not be too small to avoid excessive strain on the elderly's hand joints. At the same time, the various parts of the cane, including the handle, adjustment keys, joints, and screws, should be checked regularly. If any loose parts are found, they should be replaced immediately to ensure safe use.
There are a variety of canes available on the market, some with three claw-shaped legs at the bottom to provide more stable support. Choosing the right type of cane depends on your personal needs and physical condition. It's best to consult a chiropractor or physical therapist beforehand to avoid poor walking habits, which could lead to inconvenience or even danger.
