Many men facehair loss problemEven handsome men are not immune to hair loss, seemingly an inescapable "fate" for men. However, most cases of hair loss can be improved or even reversed. By adjusting lifestyle habits and maintaining a balanced diet, hair can still regrow. Oriental Daily News interviewed dermatologist Dr. Chan Chun-yin to debunk common myths about hair loss.
Chen Chun-yen pointed out that hair loss can be broadly divided into two categories: permanent crusted hair loss and reversible non-crusted hair loss. Crusted hair loss is usually caused by diseases, such as baldness (commonly known as "baldness head"), in which the hair follicles have died and are an irreparable type; while non-crusted hair loss is more common and is mostly related to hormonal changes. It can occur in both men and women, but the probability of it occurring in men is relatively higher.
He explained that male hormones can gradually narrow the pores of the scalp, causing hair to become thinner. When the hair becomes too thin to adhere tightly to the follicle, it is prone to falling out. Furthermore, hormones can also cause hair follicles to shrink, potentially preventing new hair from growing in the long run. Generally, hair loss begins around age 60 to 70, but some people start experiencing hair loss as early as their teens or twenties. However, Dr. Chen believes that most cases are non-scabbing hair loss, and with a healthy scalp and proper treatment, hair has a chance to regrow.
Different types of hair loss have different characteristics. Taking male pattern baldness as an example, common symptoms include...M-shaped forehead"Mediterranean" refers to the hairline receding inward on both sides of the forehead, followed by the hairline gradually moving backward; while "Mediterranean" refers to the hair on the top of the head starting to thin, which may eventually extend to the entire head and cause hair loss.
Dr. Chen emphasized that hair is one of the fastest-growing cells in the body, so its health directly reflects overall health. To improve hair loss, one should start with daily habits. He advised hair loss sufferers to ensure at least 8 hours of sleep each night and avoid staying up late, as not falling asleep past midnight puts stress on the body and may worsen hair loss.
Maintaining a balanced diet is also very important. A deficiency in certain key minerals can also affect hair health. For example, iron helps...hair growthCommon sources of zinc include red meat, while vegetarians can choose to eat spinach to supplement their diet; zinc helps maintain healthy hair follicles and can be obtained from milk, beans, and seafood. A lack of zinc in a poor daily diet can also easily lead to hair loss.
In addition, Dr. Chen reminds everyone that excessive intake of certain foods, such as carbohydrates (including porridge, noodles, rice, etc.), can stimulate the sebaceous glands, leading to increased facial and scalp oiliness, which is detrimental to hair health. He recommends consuming only one to one and a half bowls of sugar daily. Sugar is a type of carbohydrate, so reducing sugar intake is one way to improve scalp oiliness if you find yourself consuming too many sweets. Furthermore, smoking, drinking alcohol, and eating spicy and heavily seasoned foods can all stimulate oil secretion, and people with oily hair should try to avoid these.
Certain professions, such as chefs and construction workers, require prolonged wearing of hats or helmets, which can easily lead to a hot and sweaty scalp. This buildup of sweat and oil, if not properly cleaned, can increase the risk of hair loss. Dr. Chen recommends that these individuals pay special attention to scalp hygiene, ensuring that excess sweat and oil are thoroughly washed away. For those with oily hair who frequently wear hats, it is suggested to wash their hair daily; those with dry hair can wash it every other day. If prolonged wearing of hats or helmets is necessary, daily washing is recommended to keep the scalp clean and maintain a healthy balance in hair health.
