Disassembling the causes of hair loss

Severe hair loss is caused by a variety of factors. If you experience related problems, you should seek medical diagnosis in a timely manner so that appropriate treatment measures can be taken.
Hair loss is a normal physiological phenomenon; people experience it every time they shower and comb their hair.Hair lossSo, what constitutes abnormal hair loss? Dermatologist Dr. Hu Huifu explains: "Hair undergoes a metabolic process, with hair falling out and new hair growing every day. The human body has approximately 100,000 hairs in total, with an average of 50 to 100 hairs falling out daily. Simply put, hair loss is considered a problem when you lose more than 100 hairs a day, or when your hair becomes thinner."
Dr. Hu Huifu pointed out that if hair loss persists for six months, the hair follicles on the scalp will begin to shrink. At this point, even with medication, the effect may not be ideal. Therefore, hair loss problems must be addressed as early as possible.
There are three main causes of hair loss: androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, and telogen effluvium. Dr. Hu explained, "Androgenetic alopecia is related to family history and can affect both men and women. Excessive androgen production in hair follicles leads to follicle atrophy, resulting in thinner and sparser hair. One 30-year-old male patient initially thought his hair loss was due to lack of sleep and work stress, exhibiting symptoms like a 'M-shaped' hairline and 'male pattern baldness.' Later, he discovered he had hereditary androgenetic alopecia; his father and brother also had similar hair loss problems. Another common cause is alopecia areata (also known as spot baldness), which is caused by a problem with the autoimmune system attacking hair follicles and affecting hair growth. Some believe it's related to stress. About 10% of patients experience complete hair loss, and even eyebrows, eyelashes, and body hair may show the same symptoms. Telogen effluvium refers to hair prematurely entering the resting phase due to extreme psychological or physical stress, lasting 2 to 3 days." Significant hair loss within a month can be caused by factors such as serious illness, severe stress, malnutrition, or medication effects. Symptoms include widespread hair loss and thinning hair. Furthermore, underlying medical conditions related to hair loss, such as iron-deficiency anemia, thyroid dysfunction, lupus, and chronic illnesses like liver or kidney failure, can also contribute to hair loss.Hair follicle growthThis causes hair to stop growing.
Alopecia areata causes localized hair loss, with the affected area appearing in a circular pattern. Male pattern baldness typically begins at the forehead (commonly known as the "M-shaped" hairline) and the crown.
Treatment methods for hair loss
Hair loss is caused by a variety of reasons, and there are corresponding treatments for different causes. Dr. Hu pointed out: "For hereditary androgenetic alopecia, if the condition is mild, doctors will prescribe a hair growth tonic called Minoxidil, which provides nutrients by increasing blood circulation to the scalp and stimulating hair follicle growth. The course of treatment generally lasts from one to several years, but the effect will gradually disappear after discontinuation. If the condition is severe and the patient is male, doctors will consider prescribing the oral medication Finasteride to suppress male hormones and promote hair follicle growth. Some cases may require hair transplant surgery to improve the hair loss condition. Among patients with alopecia areata, about half can recover naturally within a year. Some patients need to receive injections or topical steroid medications or topical hair growth tonics. Hair will start to grow after about 4 to 6 weeks. Patients with severe conditions may need to take oral medications or receive immunotherapy. As for telogen effluvium, after removing the causes of hair loss, such as properly managing mental stress and improving malnutrition, hair will automatically resume growth after about 6 months." Steroid injections into the scalp can be used to treat alopecia areata.
There are rules to hair washing habits
Proper hair care can effectively prevent hair loss. Dr. Hu offers the following hair care advice: "Avoid prolonged periods without washing your hair to prevent the buildup of oil and dirt on the scalp, which can lead to seborrheic dermatitis, clogged hair follicles, and other problems. Maintain proper scalp cleanliness. Comb your hair before shampooing to reduce dirt on the scalp. When using shampoo, gently massage your scalp and hair; avoid scratching your scalp with your nails. Also, avoid using excessively hot water to prevent scalp damage. Choose a mild, fragrance-free shampoo. People with sensitive or dry scalps should avoid using shampoos with strong cleansing power. When using hair care or styling products, apply them to the hair, avoiding contact with the scalp to prevent irritation or clogged hair follicles. Thoroughly rinse styling products after use. After washing your hair, avoid using a hairdryer on an excessively hot setting to dry it, as this can damage the scalp. Also, avoid tying your hair too tightly for extended periods to reduce pulling on the scalp and lower the risk of hair loss." Eat three types of vegetables and two types of fruit daily to ensure adequate nutrition and prevent hair loss.
Start with lifestyle habitsPreventing hair loss
To reduce the risk of hair loss, the first step is to cultivate good lifestyle habits. Dr. Hu points out: "Maintain a balanced diet, avoiding excessive dieting or a biased diet towards certain nutrients while neglecting others. For healthy hair growth, it is recommended to consume more protein, iron, zinc, and other minerals, as well as various vitamins. Foods rich in protein include fish, meat, eggs, tofu, and milk; dark green vegetables and red meat are rich in iron; and various fruits and vegetables are important sources of vitamins. Avoid excessive weight loss in a short period, which can reduce the likelihood of telogen effluvium. In addition, maintain a relaxed and cheerful mood, ensure sufficient sleep, and engage in moderate exercise. Wear a hat when outdoors in strong sunlight, as sun exposure can make hair dry, brittle, and accelerate scalp aging." High-quality tofu contains up to 15 grams of protein per 100 grams.
Answering common hair loss myths
  1. I experience hair loss when I wash my hair. Should I wash my hair less often?
Dr. Hu: "The hair that falls out when you wash your hair is actually hair that has already entered the resting phase. It would fall out naturally even if you didn't wash your hair. In fact, as long as the hair follicle is not damaged or atrophied, it will enter the growth phase in about three months and the hair will grow back."
  1. Do bleaching, dyeing, and perming hair cause hair loss?
Dr. Hu: "Bleaching, dyeing, and perming do not directly cause hair loss, but if the hair dye causes a severe scalp sensitivity reaction or even leads to bacterial infection, it may result in hair loss. Therefore, you should reduce the frequency of perming and dyeing to decrease the chance of the hair dye irritating your scalp."
  1. How effective are anti-hair loss shampoos or conditioners?
Dr. Hu: "Currently, there is no medical evidence to suggest that commercially available anti-hair loss shampoos or conditioners are effective in treating hair loss."
  1. Are folk remedies circulating in the public, such as applying "brandy" or "ginger" and massaging the scalp to promote hair growth, true?
Dr. Hu: "None of these methods have scientific evidence to prove their effectiveness. Trying them indiscriminately may cause scalp allergies or even increase the chance of hair loss." It's a popular online claim that massaging the scalp with ginger can prevent hair loss, based on the belief that gingerol in ginger can promote scalp blood circulation and stimulate hair follicle regeneration. However, Dr. Hu states that this method is not scientifically proven, and indiscriminate use may lead to scalp allergies.
What is scalp micropigmentation?
Hairline tattooing, also known as scalp micropigmentation or scalp micropigmentation (SMP), works on a similar principle to eyebrow tattooing or body tattooing. It involves densely dotting the scalp around the hairline, where hair loss has occurred, to simulate the appearance of hair and hair follicles, creating highly realistic hair-like lines to improve the appearance of thinning hair. However, the pigment used will gradually fade with skin cell metabolism, lasting approximately 2 to 3 years, or it may not fade completely, only becoming lighter. If you are not satisfied with the results or want to remove it, you can seek medical help to have the pigment removed with laser treatment, but it may not be completely removed in one session.
