Many netizens have noticed that their complexion seems to become increasingly sallow after frequently cooking in the kitchen, worrying that this will eventually lead to what is commonly known as a "yellow-faced woman." Is this really the case? Oriental Daily News interviewed dermatologist Dr. Chen Houyi to explain the effects of kitchen fumes on the skin and related skincare methods.
Dr. Chen Houyi explained that the term "yellow-faced woman" doesn't refer to a completely yellow face, but rather that prolonged exposure to cooking fumes can damage skin quality, making it appear dull and aged. He pointed out that cooking fumes irritate the skin, and if combined with prolonged mask-wearing, it can easily lead to excessive oil secretion, exacerbating the problem.Acne problemsIn addition, harmful substances in cooking fumes may penetrate into the dermis of the skin, affecting the structure of collagen, accelerating skin aging, and even forming wrinkles.
While the damage caused by cooking fumes to the skin should not be ignored, Dr. Chen emphasizes that skin condition can still improve with early improvements in lifestyle habits and enhanced skincare. He suggests that if you notice a worsening of your complexion related to cooking, you should take action as soon as possible to address the issue.Daily skincareThe earlier you address a skin problem, the better the results. He explained that if skin problems are left untreated until later in life, the treatment becomes more difficult, making daily self-care extremely important.
Regarding the cooking environment, Dr. Chen suggests using a range hood as much as possible to reduce the accumulation of cooking fumes in the kitchen, thereby minimizing their impact on the skin. Additionally, if possible, consider using an induction cooker instead of an open flame to further reduce the production of cooking fumes.
If it has already appearedsallow complexionThere's no need to worry excessively about this situation. Dr. Chen suggests focusing on daily cleansing and choosing suitable skincare products, such as those containing vitamins C and E, which can help improve skin tone and restore radiance. Additionally, always apply sunscreen when going out during the day to prevent further damage from UV rays. In terms of diet, consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables can also help improve skin health and radiance.
Besides facial skin tone issues, many housewives also face hand skin problems. Dr. Chen pointed out that the number of people seeking treatment for "housewife's hand" has been on the rise recently. "Housewife's hand" actually refers to hand eczema, and common symptoms include skin inflammation, redness, swelling, itching, and even pus or oozing. He explained that this is mainly due to prolonged cooking, frequent contact with dish soap to clean dishes, and frequent use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers, which damage the protective film of the skin on the hands, making the skin dry, sensitive, and easily irritated.
Dr. Chen advises housewives to wear gloves when washing dishes or cleaning to minimize direct contact with cleaning products. After each cleaning session, it is recommended to apply a suitable amount of moisturizer to help repair the skin barrier and prevent eczema from worsening. By improving lifestyle habits and strengthening protective measures, skin problems caused by cooking can be effectively prevented and soothed, allowing housewives to also have healthy skin.
